Three crossings, all within easy reach.

Most visitors arrive by car ferry from Southampton, Portsmouth or Lymington. All three routes meet at Newport, in the centre of the island, and from there it is the same short drive south to the estate.

Crossing

Southampton to East Cowes

Red Funnel car ferry · approx. 1 hr crossing · 25-min drive to Gatcombe

  1. Leaving East Cowes, take the second exit at the roundabout onto Well Road, joining the A3021.
  2. Follow the A3021, then the A3054, south into Newport.
  3. Leave Newport heading south on the A3020, signed Blackwater and Godshill.
  4. Stay on the A3020 past Blackwater, then turn right onto Highwood Lane for Gatcombe.
  5. Follow the lane into the village; the estate entrance is marked with stone gateposts.
  6. Continue down the drive and follow signs to the Old Stable Block for visitor parking.
Crossing

Portsmouth to Fishbourne

Wightlink car ferry · approx. 45-min crossing · 30-min drive to Gatcombe

  1. From Fishbourne, follow Fishbourne Lane (B3339) out to the A3054.
  2. Take the A3054 south-west through Wootton into Newport.
  3. Leave Newport heading south on the A3020, signed Blackwater and Godshill.
  4. Stay on the A3020 past Blackwater, then turn right onto Highwood Lane for Gatcombe.
  5. Follow the lane into the village; the estate entrance is marked with stone gateposts.
  6. Continue down the drive and follow signs to the Old Stable Block for visitor parking.
Crossing

Lymington to Yarmouth

Wightlink car ferry · approx. 40-min crossing · 35-min drive to Gatcombe

  1. From Yarmouth, join the A3054 heading east.
  2. Follow it through Shalfleet and Ningwood into Newport.
  3. Leave Newport heading south on the A3020, signed Blackwater and Godshill.
  4. Stay on the A3020 past Blackwater, then turn right onto Highwood Lane for Gatcombe.
  5. Follow the lane into the village; the estate entrance is marked with stone gateposts.
  6. Continue down the drive and follow signs to the Old Stable Block for visitor parking.

Signposted from the moment you enter the estate. Free for tour visitors. Please follow the gravel drive and park in the marked area — the tours assemble nearby.

Accessibility

Uneven ground

The gardens, vineyards and woodland walks pass over uneven terrain in places. Sturdy footwear is essential. The gardens are not currently suitable for visitors with significant mobility challenges. Please contact us before booking if you have specific needs.
