We would be delighted to welcome you to Gatcombe — a family home set within the grounds of a prestigious working wine estate, surrounded by the stunning and historic parklands of this Domesday estate. Marquee weddings are held in the parkland and gardens of the estate, with the magnificent Georgian house rising behind you, the vineyards falling away below, and the lake and ancient wood beyond. Few settings in England are quite like it, and we only open it to a handful of couples each year.
Gatcombe is a place of exquisite beauty, often bathed in the bright sunshine that is the hallmark of the island.
Gatcombe remains a family home, and we have chosen to keep it so. It is this that gives the estate its particular atmosphere: the sense of a house still lived in and loved, a vineyard tended through the seasons, and grounds that have been walked for a thousand years. It is also why every couple who marries at Gatcombe brings their own professional wedding planner — not an optional extra, but the one condition of every wedding here, and the only way we open the estate.
Your planner becomes a true partner in bringing your day to life here — working with us from the very first conversation through to the final farewell, and shaping every detail around the two of you: the marquee and its dressing, the kitchen and the cellar, the flowers, the light, the music and the flow of the day, and every supplier who sets foot on the estate. This is simply how the finest private estates in England are enjoyed, and for a home still lived in and a vineyard still growing, it is what allows us to open our doors with real confidence.
The result is a wedding that feels entirely and unmistakably yours — timeless rather than templated, deeply personal, and delivered with a calm and seamless hand, leaving you free simply to be present in it.
Couples are sometimes surprised to learn how well the Island is placed for a wedding of this calibre. Its long history of staging events and festivals of international scale has produced an exceptional depth of expertise, and everything a great wedding requires — world-class catering, marquees and staging, lighting, sound and production, florists, musicians and transport — is found here at the very highest level. Nothing need be shipped across the water that the Island cannot provide better itself.
If you already have a planner, we look forward to meeting them. If you do not, we are happy to suggest planners who know the estate, among them Wed & Prosper, and others accomplished in country marquee weddings of this kind. The most sought-after planners, like the loveliest summer dates, are spoken for well over a year ahead, so we would gently encourage you to begin the conversation early.
The Coach House is reserved for the wedding party, and every wedding at Gatcombe includes it — it is part of the wedding, not an option alongside it. Set in the Old Stable Block, a short walk from the house, it was the first of the estate’s buildings to be brought back to life, and it has been done exquisitely.
Two vast Crittall arched windows now fill the openings where the coach gates once stood, flooding the rooms with light, while the interiors pair mid-century pieces with a pared-back modern rusticity — a palette of stone, oak and linen that puts texture and calm before show. Four bedrooms and two bathrooms sleep eight in comfort, the couple and those closest to them, offering a private retreat in which to gather on the eve of the wedding, dress on the morning itself, and breakfast together the day after.
The Coach House is yours from the Sunday before the wedding to the Sunday after — allowing the days leading up to the celebration to unfold as gently as the day itself.
Many couples choose to marry at St Olave’s, the thirteenth-century church that was once the estate’s own chapel and still stands within its embrace. From the south door the newly married couple can walk directly through the private English oak gate into the estate grounds, with the whole party following through the gardens to the marquee.
Grade I listed, with the oldest stained glass on the Island, its chancel is lit by windows from the founding partners of Morris & Co — William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown and Edward Burne-Jones, the great names of the Pre-Raphaelite circle. It is a church of rare beauty and intimacy, and it gives a Gatcombe wedding a sense of place that few settings can match.
Gatcombe is a working wine estate, and couples who wish to can bring something of it to the day: the estate’s prestige Pinot Noir, on which everything here is founded, or a wine from our developing library of precise and acclaimed rosés and other styles.
Commence the celebrations with an estate rosé as your guests arrive, or serve the prestige Pinot Noir with your wedding feast, set beside wines of your own choosing — we are a young estate and would never expect the cellar to be ours alone. It is simply a way of carrying a little of the place into the glass.
Viewings are by private appointment, and we should be delighted to walk the parkland with you and your planner, to show you where the marquee might sit, and to hear what you have in mind.
Every wedding at Gatcombe is booked on the same terms.
